Almost-Sleepover in Southfield, Massachusetts

Ten-year-old Emma and four-year-old Maggie Mae made a big difference in the lives of folks at a local nursing home.
“Our almost-sleepover was a success, although the activity we chose required that we have no more than 5 people attend,” said mom Courtney. ” We delivered ice cream to elderly and dementia patients at Geer Nursing Home.  Our au pair, Suzy, organized it by contacting Geer and asking what we could do to help out the residents.  They suggested that we volunteer to serve ice cream to all of the residents on Saturday.”

“We served ice cream to three wings of the facility.  Our group consisted of Emma (10), Maggie Mae (5), Ilya (14) (my best friend’s son), and Suzy (20).  And me of course. :)   Suzy and I scooped ice cream, Ilya pushed the cart and cleaned up our messes, Emma handed out  spoons and napkins, and Maggie was the little ice cream delivery girl.  They gave us aprons and it was a lot of fun for all of us.  The residents really seemed to enjoy Maggie delivering them their ice cream, as they do not get to see children often.

The really beautiful thing that came out of it is that we are going to continue volunteering to do the ice cream cart on a regular basis (I’m hoping once a month) and we are also going to bring in our little kitten Sparkles for a visit.

Thank you for all of your hard work in organizing such an amazing event.  It was a really amazing lesson to teach our children how easy and gratifying it is to put a little bit of time, energy and effort into helping others.”

Thank you, Courtney, Emma and Maggie Mae (and Ilya and Suzy, too)! What a beautiful way to show you care!
